Work in the STEAM Lab- October 2023
Various grades come into the STEAM Lab to focus on many aspects of STEAM education. Grades 3 and 4 are currently focusing on Structural Engineering, while Grade 5 is using thier knowledge of space from the Amplify curriculum to create dioramas.
STEAM in Room 3-311
Class 3-311 created towers out of candy pumpkins and toothpicks in order to learn about structural engineering. They realized different shapes and heights of a structure allow for varying levels of stability and strength. As a follow up activity students then took what they learned and created cages for their Thanksgiving turkeys after they read How to Catch a Turkey. They used what they learned about stability and strength in October to create cages that would hold a wild turkey.
Halloween 2023 STEAM Pumpkin Decorating Contest
STEAM in Room 3-303
Students in 3-303 were learning engineering vocabulary through a structural design challenge. Students during this activity learned engineering vocabulary words like criteria and constraint. Their criteria was to build a structure using only blocks and string to lift the blocks. Students constraints were they could not touch the blocks with their hands.
5th Grade STEAM Projects to create pamphlet's about their reading topics: Natural Disasters
District 20 STEAM Expo-2024
Students in class 8-508 and3-303 represented P.S./I.S. 192 at the District 20 STEAM Expo this year. Grade 8 students created roller coasters using recycled materials and masking tape, while grade 3 students studied animal adaptations and created a new animal based on the environment an existing animal was moved to. Grade 8 and grade 3 both worked on these projects during the STEAM period with Mrs. Garland. Mrs. Mei and Mrs. Dipaolo accompanied the students in Mrs. Garland's absents along with Mr. Muscarelle who is so supportive of our schools STEAM program.
